Run for Peace Event

Nicosia

23 September 2023

On September 23, the Technical Committee on Culture, in collaboration with the runners’ group RUNITE, successfully hosted the “International Peace Day Run.” This collaborative running event brought together Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot runners, as well as UN personnel. Held just after the UN International Day of Peace on September 21, the run symbolized the solidarity of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in promoting peace on a global scale while also encouraging a culture of running, a healthier lifestyle, and an appreciation for common heritage sites.

The 7-8 km course wound through the heart of Nicosia, passing key landmarks such as Eleftheria Square, Ledra Street, Arasta, Büyük Han, and Ledra Palace. The race concluded in front of the Ledra Palace Hotel, where participants were welcomed with refreshments.

Beyond its athletic focus, the event fostered meaningful connections across cultural divides, offering runners the chance to engage with the rich history of old Nicosia. Each participant received a commemorative T-shirt and a finishing medal as a keepsake. With around 200 runners taking part, the event was widely promoted on social media, emphasizing inclusivity, particularly for women and youth.

The “International Peace Day Run” successfully highlighted Nicosia’s cultural heritage while reinforcing the solidarity of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot runners in promoting peace. The event was funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP in coordination with OSASG-Cyprus.
