“In Culture We Trust”
Ledra Palace Hotel
03 February 2020
On February 3–4, 2020, the Technical Committee on Culture hosted the “In Culture We Trust” Art Exhibition at the Ledra Palace Hotel. Funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP in coordination with OSASG-Cyprus, the event showcased a collection of paintings by Greek Cypriot artists, alongside audio-visual material from the CyBC archives related to Turkish Cypriots. These cultural artifacts were exchanged as part of confidence-building measures mutually agreed upon by the two sides.
To document the exhibition, a trilingual catalogue (Greek, Turkish, and English) was published in both print and digital formats. A total of 1,000 printed copies were distributed across the island, while the digital edition ensured broader accessibility.
The exhibition attracted approximately 650 visitors over two days, including religious leaders, art community representatives, NGOs, and members of the Technical Committee on Culture. This symbolic gesture of exchanging cultural artifacts emphasizes the importance of art in promoting peace and reconciliation.
By returning these cultural treasures, the event underscored a significant move towards rebuilding trust between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots.
