Ancient Theater of Salamis

28 September 2016

On September 28, 2016, the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC), in collaboration with the Famagusta Walled City Association (MASDER), presented a co-production of the National Theatre, the State Theatre of Northern Greece, and THOC, featuring Sophocles’ tragedy Antigone at the Ancient Theater of Salamis in Famagusta.

Held under the auspices of the Technical Committee on Culture, the performance was subtitled in both Turkish and English, ensuring accessibility for a diverse audience.

The event attracted an unprecedented crowd of approximately 4,000 people, with 24 buses transporting attendees from various cities across the island, while many others arrived in their private vehicles.

Beyond its artistic significance, the event carried deep symbolic meaning, as Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots came together to experience a timeless piece of ancient Greek theater. The powerful message of Antigone—”Love prevails”—resonated strongly with the audience, reinforcing the connecting role of culture and the arts.
